Tonya Harding has retired as an American figure skating champion. In 1991 and in 1994, she was awarded the US Championship. She gained prominence as a figure skater in the year 1989 when she took home the 'Skate America' competition. Tonya, after being forced to leave the figure skating sport due to an incident that took place in 1994, began boxing. Tonya was a professional boxer in 2003. The popularity of her became more prominent after she was featured in television and films and led to her becoming an international star. Her rise to national celebrity though was the incident that occurred in 1994, when Tonya's main competitor Nancy Kerrigan was mysteriously attacked just before the 'National Champion.' Tonya used her popularity and status to her advantage, so that she changed the story of women's ice skating culture. Many academics have used her story to assess and assess students. A biopic, entitled I, Tonya, was also released in the year 2017.
